Michigan's Attorney General wants to speed up same-sex marriage appeal

LANSING (WKZO) -- Attorney General Bill Schuette is asking the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals to expedite his appeal defending the state’s ban on same-sex marriages.

A Federal Judge lifted the ban because he says it denies gays equal protection under the law, a violation of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Schuette says Michigan voters approved the ban, putting it in the state constitution and it’s his job to defend it, but there is no need to drag it out or waste tax money either.

Rather than have the appellate tribunal review his brief, he wants to have the whole court, all 16 judges review it, eliminating one step on the way to an eventual appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Critics from the pro-gay marriage camp say it may have more to do with election year timing than concern about taxpayer dollars, but they would also like to see a resolution sooner rather than later.
