COOPER (WKZO) -- More details have surfaced in a pair of fatal traffic accidents that happened early Tuesday in Cooper Township.
An investigation by Kalamazoo County Sheriff's deputies has determined that 55-year-old Theobald Metzer was riding his 2009 Kawasaki motorcycle southbound in the 6300-block of Douglas Avenue when he struck a deer in the middle of the roadway. Evidence indicates Metzer was killed as a result of the crash despite wearing a helmet.
A short while later, 78-year-old Edmund Janke was driving down the unlit roadway when he swerved to avoid Metzer's body. As a result, Janke lost control of his 1997 Saturn and he was ejected from the vehicle. Janke does not appear to have been wearing a seatbelt and it is believed he was killed instantly when hitting the ground.
Speed is not believed to have been a factor in either case and it is unknown if alcohol was involved. Funeral arrangements are pending.
