KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- A suspected drunken driver has been arrested while a passenger has been hospitalized after the driver allegedly fled from police.
Around 1:40 a.m. Friday, Kalamazoo Public Safety officers were called to a business in the 1300-block of Ravine Road on a call about persons refusing to leave. When officers arrived, two vehicles left the area, one speeding off and nearly clipping a patrol car.
When police tried to stop the vehicle, the driver sped South on Douglas Street. The officer cut off pursuit, but the female driver continued speeding, ultimately slamming the vehicle into a utility pole in the 1100-block of Douglas. One female passenger was uninjured while a male passenger had to be taken to the hospital with significant injuries.
The 19-year-old woman from Kalamazoo that had been driving fled the vehicle before being tracked down and arrested for fleeing and eluding police, as well as operating while intoxicated. The injured passenger was last listed in critical condition.
