UPDATE: Suspect in killing of State Trooper Paul Butterfield formally charged

MASON COUNTY (WKZO) -- 19-year-old suspected cop killer Eric Knysz made his first appearance in a Mason County Courtroom Friday, but only on a video monitor.

He was formally charged with the murder of State Police trooper Paul Butterfield, two gun felonies and a count of car theft. He will also be tried as an habitual offender.

He answered the questions with yes and no answers, was denied bond and told not to communicate with his pregnant wife, Sarah, in any way because she is a co-defendant.

His preliminary hearing is set for September 25th.

\The funeral for Michigan State Police Trooper Paul Butterfield will be held today in Manistee.

An estimated one-thousand police officers, and another 13-hundred family, friends and interested parties are expected to attend.

Chris Luty, President of the Michigan State Troopers Association says the ceremony will include a procession of officers, music, and Governor Rick Snyder, MSP Director, Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue and family members will give eulogies. Luty says it will conclude with the Presentation of the flag to Butterfield’s family.

It will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Manistee High School, after a three hour visitation period at 10 a.m.
