DETROIT (WKZO)- Friday the 13th was not unlucky for the Detroit Tigers or Justin Verlander as he got his 13th victory tonight to improve his record to 13-11. Verlander went 6 2/3 innings giving up three runs on nine hits while striking out seven.
The Tigers struck first in the first inning as Austin Jackson scored on a Torii Hunter groundout to shortstop. The Royals tied the score in the fourth inning, but in the bottom of the fourth the Tigers started to open it up. After Miguel Cabrera hit a double, Prince Fielder stepped up to the plate and smacked a two-run home run to right field, his 24th of the year, to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead.
Then in the bottom of the fifth the Tigers added to their lead. Torii Hunter drove in Jackson and Alex Avila to make the score 5-1. Two batters later Prince Fielder drove in Hunter to make the game 6-1.
The Royals countered with a couple of runs in the top of the sixth to cut the Tigers lead to 6-3. It then got a little dicey in the top of the eighth as the Royals were able to load the bases as Drew Smyly and Jose Veras each walked a batter and Veras also hit a batter. Joaquin Benoit came in then with two outs and struck out David Lough to get the Tigers out of the jam. Benoit then sent the Royals down in order in the 9th to pick up his 19th save of the year.
Bruce Chen (7-3) takes the loss for the Royals. The Tigers are back in action tomorrow against the Royals. Doug Fister (12-8 3.77 ERA) will take the mound for the Tigers. Ervin Santana (8-9 3.35 ERA) will get the start for the Royals. Broadcast time is set for 6:40 on AM 590 WKZO.
