State Senate votes to end gas chambers for pets

State Senator John Proos
State Senator John Proos

ST. JOSEPH (WKZO) --Animal Shelters in Michigan that use gas chambers to euthanize dogs and cats would have to shut them down if a bill sponsored by west Michigan State Senator John Proos becomes law.

Right now Berrien, Branch, Cass and Van Buren Counties are the last four in the state that use gas chambers, which they say are more cost effective, but that animal groups say are less humane.

Proos says animal right groups, like the Michigan Humane Society have offered grants to cover the costs of using lethal injections.

The bill was approved unanimously in the Michigan Senate this week and now heads to a house committee for their consideration.
