CHICAGO (WKZO)- It was a pitcher's duel between Anibal Sanchez and Jose Quintana, but Quintana did not give up the run to give the Tigers a 1-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Matt Lindstrom (2-4) gave up the only run of the night on an Omar Infante single in the eighth inning to bring home Prince Fielder.
The Tigers recorded 10 hits on the evening while the White Sox were held to five hits. Sanchez (14-7) pitched brillantly as he pitched 7 1/3 innings giving up only five hits while walking four and striking out 10. Joaquim Benoit (18) picks up the save for Tigers.
The Tigers looked like they were going to strike right away in the top of the first inning as they loaded the bases thanks to a Torii Hunter a single and Miguel Cabrera and Fielder being walked, but they came away with zero runs.
The White Sox were able to put a runner on third in the bottom of the fifth, but could not bring the runner home as Alexei Ramirez grounded out to end the inning.
In the top of the seventh the Tigers were able to put Infante on third, but Torii Hunter grounded out to second to end the inning.
After the Tigers took the 1-0 lead in the top of the eighth, the White Sox were able to put two runners on in the bottom of the inning. Tigers relief pitchers Jose Veras and Drew Smyly came in and took care of the final two outs of the inning.
The Tigers have the day off tomorrow. They will be back in action on Friday as they begin their final 10 game home stand of the season. The Tigers will face the Kansas City Royals as Justin Verlander (12-11 3.64 ERA) will once again try for his 13th win of the season. He will be facing off against Royals pitcher Danny Duffy (2-0 1.85 ERA). Broadcast time is at 6:45 pm on AM 590 WKZO.
