State lawmaker says more should be done to stop the Asian carp

LANSING (WKZO) -- State Senator John Proos is pleased that the Michigan Department of Natural Resources is investigating the Saint Joseph River in southwest Michigan to determine if the invasive Asian carp has managed to get that far into the state. Experts fear that the voracious Asian carp could invade the Great Lakes and kill off native species, leading to a decline in Michigan's fishing and tourism industries.

Proos says we need definitive answers on what's going on, noting that the DNR on Tuesday closed about two miles of the Saint Joseph River to conduct a field exercise that will help the state test its plan in anticipation of what might occur if Asian carp are discovered in Lake Michigan or one of its rivers.

Proos added that if that Asian Carp is found in the Great Lakes, the federal government should shut down locks in the river systems connected to the lakes to prevent the further spread of the fish.
