MASON COUNTY (WKZO) -- A 19-year-old is being treated after police say he shot and killed a State Trooper during a traffic stop, and was then wounded in a second shoot out with police.
It all began when the suspect was pulled over in a stolen car near Freesoil in Mason County for a traffic violation at about 6:20 last evening, and the suspect opened fire on Trooper Paul Butterfield.
He was struck in the head and died from the injury.
Lt. Chris McIntyre says the suspect was spotted two hours later gassing up at the Marathon Station in Dublin and apparently didn’t intend to be arrested without a fight.
He was shot in the leg during the exchange of gunfire. A girl in his car was also taken into custody.
Governor Snyder says the death of Trooper Butterfield is a reminder of the “extraordinary difficulty of their jobs and the sacrifices they make”.
