FREESOIL, MI (WTVB) - A Michigan State Police trooper is dead of gunshot wounds suffered during a traffic stop. Authorities say Paul Butterfield died late Monday night during emergency surgery. Authorities say Monday evening, an unidentified man and woman in a stolen car were pulled over and exchanged gunfire with Butterfield during a traffic stop near Freesoil in Mason County. The pair fled and were captured around 2 hours later in Manistee County. Authorities there say the pair were involved in a shootout there, too.
Governor Snyder says the death of Trooper Butterfield is a reminder of the “extraordinary difficulty of their jobs and the sacrifices they make.” Butterfield was a veteran of the U.S. Army and joined the Michigan State Police in 1999.
