DETROIT (WKZO)- Omar Infante came out swinging tonight hitting two home runs and helped spark the Detroit Tigers to a 10-5 victory over the Cleveland Indians.
Infante hit a three run home run off of Scott Kazmir in the bottom of the second inning to help give the Tigers an early 3-1 lead. Torii Hunter drove in Ramon Santiago on a single in the inning as well to give the Tigers a 4-1 lead after two innings.
The Indians chipped away at the lead and cut it to 4-2 after five innings. Infante though came back in the sixth and hit a two-run home run to give the Tigers a 6-2 lead. It was Infante's eighth career muti home run game.
The Indians however would not go away as Yan Gomes hit a solo home run in the seventh to cut the lead to 6-3. Then in the eighth Carlos Santana hit a ball deep to center field that bounced off the glove of Austin Jackson. Jackson's right arm crashed hard into the wall and was unable to chase after the ball. Santana and Jason Kipnis scored on the inside the park home run to cut the Tigers lead to 6-5. The trainers came out to look at Jackson's arm and after a few minutes everything was determined to be OK and Jackson remained in the game.
The Tigers answered in the eighth. Austin Jackson proved he was OK by hitting a tripe to deep left center driving in Hernan Perez and Ramon Santiago. The next batter Jose Iglesias pulled off the squeeze bunt to bring home Jackson. Prince Fielder rounded out the scoring by driving in Iglesias on a double making the game 10-5 in favor of the Tigers. Joaquin Benoit finished off the game pitching a scoreless ninth.
Anibal Sanchez (12-7) picks up the win for the Tigers going 6 2/3 innings giving up six hits on three runs striking out five and walking one. Scott Kazmir (7-7) takes the loss for the Indians.
The Tigers now have an 8 1/2 game lead over the Indians and are 15-3 against Cleveland on the season. The Tigers look to go for the sweep and end the season series with a victory over Clevland tomorrow. Justin Verlander (12-10 3.73 ERA) will take the mound for the Tigers going for win number 13. The Indians will counter with Danny Salazar (1-2 3.67 ERA). Broadcast time is at 12:40 pm on AM 590 WKZO with the first pitch slated for 1:08
