KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Several local governments are trying to work together on setting up a consolidated 911 dispatch center because they say it would make managing emergency calls much more efficient and eventually save money.
Kalamazoo County Commission Dave Buskirk says that having multiple dispatch centers is inefficient. Although it would cost some money up front to set up a consolidated center, he says that down the road, having one would save taxpayers. Buskirk says the current way of doing things can be confusing.
If there's just one, large dispatch center for the whole county, he says problems like that would be easier to deal with. Now local governments, including the city and township, have to get together and decide how a consolidated system would be run, and how each community would be represented with it. Buskirk notes they tried doing this before, but he thinks that, this time around, there's more of a will.
