No furloughs planned yet in Michigan due to federal shutdown

LANSING, MI (WTVB) - The state of Michigan has no plans to furlough state workers funded by federal dollars unless the shutdown goes past Halloween. Kurt Weiss, spokesman for the Department of Technology Management and Budget says that’s when the money begins to run out. He says there are much scarier dates and they arrive much sooner, like October 17th, the debt ceiling deadline. Weiss says if that doesn’t get fixed, it’s bad news for the economy, bad news for anyone that has a 401-K, and bad news for the state when it comes to the interest rates Michigan has to pay for borrowing.

United Auto Workers spokesman Ray Halman says there is enough money to fund food stamps through the end of the month, but other programs for the poor could begin to go dry next week. Halman points to food and energy security, law enforcement duties and many vital functions will be at risk of going away if they don’t resolve things in Washington.
