NEWAYGO COUNTY (WKZO) -- It all ended happily enough with a cold, thirsty, bruised and scratched toddler turning up on a trail about two miles from her Barton Township home, Wednesday afternoon, lost and scared.
But Amber Rose Smith was alive and asking for hot chocolate. Her parents were relieved and exhausted.
She survived a night in the Manistee National Forest, wearing only a tank top in temperatures that dipped into the 40’s.
She spent the night at Spectrum health under observation, just to make sure she was okay.
Investigators will want to talk with Dale and Diane Smith to find out why the 2-1/2 year old, who has wandered away before, was able to do it again.
They will want to make sure there aren’t some deeper issues involved before signing off on the case, and that something is done to make sure that this is the last time it happens.
