KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Wednesday was count day in Michigan Schools and some preliminary numbers are in.
It appears for the first time in the 7-years since they introduced The Promise, enrollment may be down in Kalamazoo schools this year.
Spokesman Alex Lee says they blame a drop in the birth rate and moving the birth date for kindergartners up a month last year for a drop of about 50-students this coming year.
Portage Schools spokesperson Sarah Baker says those factors also played a role in a drop of 25 students in their enrollment estimate.
It could be worse. Grand Rapids School officials are estimating their enrollment will drop by 700 students this school year.
Battle Creek’s preliminary numbers were not available.
Enrollment numbers are critical these days of course because schools are funded per pupil in Michigan. The more students, the more money.
