Saving green by thinking green, its working at Kalamazoo Schools

KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- After a summer of upgrades and tightening, the Kalamazoo School District is greener than it used to be, and it has already paid off.

Kalamazoo School Facilities Director Al Tyler says they executed 16 projects over the summer replacing windows, upgrading heating systems, lights and insulation resulting in 38-thousand dollars in rebates from Consumers Energy.

He says the energy improvements they have installed in the last 4 year saves them about a quarter million dollars a year in lower energy bills.

On top of that Arnie Mikon, the President of Tower Pinkster handed over a 44-thousand dollar check, the District's share of a tax break for the renovation of Woodward School for Technology, and other schools.

Superintendent Michael Rice says this is the third check they have received for tax breaks on energy efficiency projects. He says they put the money into their literacy program.
