LANSING, MI (WTVB) - Nearly 9 million mothers and babies are feeling the effects of the government shutdown.  It's choked off the flow of money into the nutrition program known as WIC.  Although most states have enough money to run WIC themselves for a week or so, millions of women have stopped going to their local offices since the shutdown began Tuesday.

The Michigan Department of Community Health says it offices have received a lot of inquiries about WIC and they want clients around the state to know that their clinics continue to operate as usual and they project they can maintain all services until early November. WIC provides vouchers for healthy food, baby formula, breastfeeding support, and other necessities at clinics throughout the U.S.
