KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Kalamazoo’s movers and shakers came out Wednesday afternoon for the “Topping-off” ceremony at WMU’s new School of Medicine downtown.
They attached the final topmost beam to the steel framing of a building, complete with American Flag and an evergreen tree for good luck. Its a construction tradition.
Mayor Bobby Hopewell says turning out doctors is going to be another thing that Kalamazoo is famous for.
The crowd applauded as the beam was bolted into place.
The goal is to have the renovation of the former Upjohn research building and construction on the new addition done by June of next year in time for the first classes in September of 2014.
