KALAMAZOO (WKZO) – Western Michigan hockey jumped out to a 4-0 lead in front of 4,072 at Lawson Ice Arena to complete the home-and-home series sweep of former CCHA opponent Michigan State Saturday night.

All four Bronco scores were in the first two periods. On their first power play of the night, Kenney Morrison lit the lamp for the first time this season on a one-timer from Dennis Brown at the 4:09 mark to give Western Michigan a 1-0 lead. Justin Kovacs added to the lead with his fifth goal of the year, stuffing a shot from the crease at the 9:57 of the frame.

The Broncos put the hammer down in the middle frame, outshooting MSU 14-11, while adding a pair of scores to their lead.

Chris Dienes tallied the Broncos’ second power play goal and his first career goal in the second period off of a feed from Shane Bershbach and Josh Pitt at the 12:19 mark. Shane Berschbach got in on the action five minutes later ripping a feed from Justin Kovacs and Josh Pitt past Spartan goaltender Jake Hildebrand. The Broncos finished 2-for-6 on power play chances, and held MSU scoreless in that category.

Michigan State spoiled the shutout when Mackenzi Macearchern slipped a shot by Frank Slubowski at the 7:31 mark of the final frame.

After missing two consecutive starts, junior goalie Frank Slubowski delivered 28 saves. Western Michigan was outshot by the Spartans 29-26 on the night.

Western Michigan (5-5-2) will take part in the Shillelagh Tournament next weekend in South Bend Indiana. The Broncos are slated to battle Northeastern Friday at 4:35 pm. They will play the winner of Notre Dame/Alabama Huntsville on Saturday.
