Seat belt usage stabilizes after several years of declining numbers

LANSING (WKZO) -- Michigan is no longer number one when it comes to seat-belt usage, and it’s a national ranking that officials in the Office of Highway Safety Planning would like to regain.

Anne Readett says it’s a matter of life and death. She says seat belt usage has continued to decline in Michigan in recent years.

She says this year it stabilized at about 93% but they aren’t satisfied wth that and plan to step up efforts next year. Readett says the biggest challenge continues to be to get young men in pick-up trucks to buckle up.

Michigan has fallen behind Washington State, Oregon, California and Texas but remains within striking distance of making a comeback.
