The name of Kalamazoo's new baseball team is "The Growlers".

KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- The name of Kalamazoo’s new Summer Baseball team will be the Growlers. That name, which has a double meaning, was chosen by about 80% of the people who voted in a competition for the team’s new name.

While there is a bear, purportedly a northern Black Bear depicted in the logo, a large beer stein is also called a “growler”.    That's a tie to Kalamazoo's ever growing reputation as a beer town.

Several hundred turned out for the announcement Friday evening. There are 18-teams in the Northwoods League, the nearest one to Kalamazoo is the Battle Creek Bombers but there are teams as far away as Minnesota, and Iowa.

It’s a wooden bat league, made up mostly of amateurs from the ranks of college teams. But a lot of them end up in the big leagues.

Just this past season there were six alum of the Northwoods Leagues on the Tigers roster, including Andy Dirks, Danny Worth, Drew Smiley and Cy Young winner Max Scherzer.

They also announced that they are planning some stadium renovations at Homer Stryker Field, incorporating the logo and adding some special seating, details to be announced later.

They also announced their new Manager, Joe Carbone, who has 40 years experience as a coach, 20 as the Head Coach at Ohio University.
