RICHLAND TOWNSHIP (WKZO) -- A man who died in a head on collision on 32nd Street in Richland Township Friday afternoon may have had a diabetic reaction, and that may explain why he was driving in the wrong lane when the collision occurred.
Undersheriff Pali Matyas says it began when his van had a minor fender bender at 33rd and G Avenue. The calls poured into dispatch reporting the van driving erratically, forcing other cars off the road for nearly three miles.
Matyas says one driver got a look at him, and said he looked glassy eyed and out of touch with reality. That is consistent with a diabetic episode.
He got to 32nd right in front of the township fire department when he crashed head on into a dodge Charger.
It spun his black SUV around, he was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene.
The Second driver, a 51-year old man suffered hip and ankle injuries but is expected to survive after emergency surgery at Borgess Medical Center.
