Pittsburgh, PA (WKZO) – These Pittsburgh Pirates might be for real.
With the bases loaded in the 11th inning Russell Martin drilled a single off the wall in left field scoring Neil Walker for the only run of the game as the Pirates have swept the Tigers in a brief two game series in Pittsburgh and have taken three in row from Detroit with Thursday’s night 1-0 victory. It was the second time in three nights the Pirates beat the Tigers 1-0 in 11 innings.
Luke Putkonen took the loss for Detroit after giving up two singles and a walk in the 11th before allowing the game winning single to Martin. Bryan Morris recorded the win for the Pirates after pitching a scoreless 11th.
Tiger’s starter Doug Fister pitched very well tossing seven scoreless innings while striking out a season high 12 but didn’t factor into the decision. Fister gave up only four hits, three of them coming in the fourth, and walked only a single batter and extended his scoreless innings streak to 13.
Jeff Locke started for Pittsburgh and went 5.1 innings giving up seven hits up didn’t allow a run and only walked one.
The Tigers had nine hits but left 11 runners on base.
Despite losing three in a row the Tigers still lead the Cleveland Indians by a half game in the AL Central. With the win the Pirates now have the second best record in all of baseball.
*Fister struck out the side in the third inning.
*Neil Walker singled to start the fourth for the Pirates but was thrown out at second attempting to steal by Brayan Pena. Fister had set down nine straight Pirates before Walker’s hit
*Joaquin Benoit and Phil Coke pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth innings.
*Matt Tuiasosopo was thrown out at home trying to score from second on Avisail Garcia’s single in the fifth. The Tigers later loaded the bases in the fifth with one out but Omar Infante grounded into a fielder’s choice and Andy Dirks grounded out to second ending the threat.
*With runners on first and second and two outs in the sixth, Pena grounded out to third to end the inning.
*Tigers had runners on the corners with one down in the seventh but Andy Dirks popped out to short and Miguel Cabrera grounded out to second with no damage done.
Game Notes: The Tigers are now 2-6 in extra inning games…Fister hit Neil Walker in the first inning for his league leading 12th hit batter…Jhonny Peralta was ejected in the top of the fourth inning by home plate umpired Manny Gonzalez for arguing balls and strikes. This was the first time Peralta had been ejected in his career…Miguel Cabrera’s double in the first inning was the 400th in his career. Cabrera doubled again in the fourth but didn’t score…The Tigers will now head to Baltimore for three games with the Orioles at Camden Yards. Max Scherzer (7-0, 3.42 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for the Tigers vs. Orioles right Miguel Gonzalez.
