Rick Porcello pitches a gem but Tigers shutout in extra innings 1-0

Detroit, MI (WKZO) – Neil Walker hit a solo home run off Jose Ortega in the top half of the 11th inning to break a scoreless tie and former Tiger Jason Grilli struck out the Torii Hunter, Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder to record his Major League leading 21st save closing out the Pirates 1-0 victory over the Tigers on Tuesday night at Comerica Park.

Rick Porcello struck out a career high 11 batters over eight innings of work but didn’t factor into the decision. Porcello became the first Tiger pitcher since 1966 to pitch eight innings, allow zero runs and strike out 10 or more and not record the win.

The game was delayed 1 hour and 13 minutes due to rain.

Ortega (0-2) took the loss for the Tigers while Mark Melancon got the win for Pittsburgh. Tigers and Pirates now head to Pittsburgh for two games starting on Wednesday night.  Anibal Sanchez takes the mound for the Tigers.
