KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Every year the Girls on the Run (GOTR) Kalamazoo chapter ends their season of events with a 5K. The 2013 Girls on the Run 5K stepped off the start line Thursday evening at Western Michigan University's Waldo Stadium.
“Each girl has a running buddy, which is someone who will run or walk the whole entire 5K with them so we know every girl is safe and has someone cheering for her and available,” GOTR member Trisha Banks said. “It’s something to experience. It’s a really neat and emotional day, at least for me. I cry every time.”
“Running just gives me time to be with my friends,” ten-year-old Layla Marcum said, "“It's tough, but it's fun in the end."
Marcum completed her second GOTR 5K at Thursday's event among the thousands of other participants.
GOTR is funded by grants, donations and participant fees. To learn more about GOTR and how to get involved, click here.
