KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- A local organization that gives brand new shoes to needy school children is getting ready to celebrate its seventh birthday. The First Day Shoe Fund was set up when its organizer started volunteering for Kalamazoo school projects and noticed how many kids didn't have decent footwear.
It's grown quite a bit in the past seven years, says spokesperson Jen Brown. She tells us that, in its first year, the Fund gave out 307 pairs of shoes, and last year, it did over 2,552 pairs. It's also serving more school districts.
Brown says you'd be surprised to see how great the need is, telling us that many kinds go to school with shoes that have been patched up with cardboard and duct tape. To find out how you can help out, go to www.FirstDayShoeFund.org .
