Arlington, TX (WKZO) – Rick Porcello went 5 2/3 innings allowing just a single run and Miguel Cabrera had three hits as the Tigers doubled up the Rangers 2-1 on Friday night.
Making his fourth straight good start, Porcello recoreded just his second win of the year, striking out one, and giving up five hits before being removed in the sixth inning after issuing his only walk of the night. Jose Ortega replaced Porcello and got out of the inning without allowing a run.
Miguel Cabrera had three hits including an RBI double in fifth for the Tigers first run. Later in the inning Alex Avila made to 2-0 driving in Cabrera from third on a sac fly with the bases loaded.
Geovany Soto hit a solo home run in the Rangers half of the fifth for their only run.
Jose Valverde recorded his fourth save of the season closing out the ninth for the Tigers.
The Tigers had just six hits all coming from just three batters, Cabrera (3), Andy Dirks (2) and Victor Martinez.
The win was the 1,699th career win for Detroit manager Jim Leyland as the Tigers remain tied atop the AL Central tied with Cleveland.
Tigers and Rangers are back at it on Saturday night at 8:05. Anibal Sanchez (4-3, 2.05 ERA) gets the nod for Detroit vs. Rangers rookie righty Justin Grimm (2-3, 4.28)
