KALAMAZOO It used to be most of the Western Michigan University campus. Now East Campus sits alone on Prospect hill, housing University Archives, but soon even that will have a new home further west along Oakland Drive.
The University has released a timeline for its plans to demolish three of the buildings, and use the money they would have spent maintaining them to instead refurbish and put East Hall back to use as an Alumni Center, and possibly other uses.
Vice President Bob Miller says they plan a series of public hearings to discuss other uses. He says first they plan to hire an architect and do an inventory of all the buildings.
They plan to sell 15-million dollars in bond and pay them off using the 250-thousand a year they now spend to maintain the buildings to pay off the loan. Construction won’t begin for a while but they hope to complete it by 2015.
There is opposition to the plan, they have even distributed lawn signs but to date, they haven't convinced W.M.U. to change its plans.
