Congressman Upton will tour Palisades Plant in Covert Township after lastest leak sparks concerns

COVERT TOWNSHIP (WKZO) -- The latest incident at the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant was written off as a minor leak by Entergy and by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. 90-gallons of radioactive water leaked from a tank that has been leaking at various rates for at least two years now.

Approximately 90-gallons leaked. Most of it accidentally flowed into a collection pool, where it was diluted and then flushed into Lake Michigan.

NRC Spokesperson Viktoria Mitlyng says it represented 0.002 percent of the federal limit they are permitted to release.

Depite that, Congressman Fred Upton called the release an “outrage”.  What apparently sparked citizen complaints wasn't the amount, but rather that it was completely beyond the control of the plant staff and there was nothing to prevent it from becoming something much larger.

Even Mitlyng says that it was an unplanned release that should not have happened.

Rep. Upton intends to visit the plant, with NRC Commissioner Kristine L. Svinicki Monday for a tour and inspection. He has called for the plant to remain shut down until the tank is repaired or replaced.

He plans to meet with the media after his inspection.
