Tigers blast three home runs, defeat Cleveland 10-4


Detroit, MI (WKZO) – Max Scherzer went eight innings, allowing four runs – all earned – and striking out seven and the Tigers offense hit three home runs as Detroit opened their three game weekend series with Cleveland with a 10-4 victory Friday night. Scherzer gave up just five hits without walking a batter is now 5-0 on the season.

Prince Fielder, Miguel Cabrera and Andy Dirks all hit long balls for the Tigers as they ended the Indians four game winning streak and are now two games up over the Indians in the AL Central.

The Tigers scored three runs in the second and three more in the fourth, with solo runs in the third, fifth, seventh and eighth.   

Corey Kluber allowed eight runs and 11 hits in 4 2/3 innings for the Indians.

Tigers Highlights:

* Tigers scored three runs in the second after Victor Martinez walked to open the inning and with one down the Tigers hit three doubles in a row from Jhonny Peralta, Alex Avila and Omar Infante. Martinez and Peralta scored on Avila’s double to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead. Torii Hunter knocked in Avila for the Tigers third run of the inning.

*Prince Fielder’s ninth home run of the year, a solo shot, padded the Tigers lead to 4-1.  

*Miguel Cabrera added to the Tigers lead with a three run bomb in the fifth inning, making the score 7-2. Omar Infante and Austin Jackson were on base.

*Alex Avila drove in the Tigers eighth run with his third RBI of the night, singling in the fifth, scoring Peralta from second.

*Andy Dirks hit a solo shot in the seventh inning, increasing the Tigers lead to 9-4. Dirks has three home runs this year.

*Victor Martinez drove in the Tigers 10th run in the eighth on a single scoring Jackson.

*Joaquin Benoit pitched a scoreless ninth.

Tigers Lowlights:

*Cleveland hit two doubles in the first, the second double from Nick Swisher scored Jason Kipnis to put the Indians on top 1-0.

*The Indians added their second run in the fourth inning on an RBI ground out from Carlos Santana, scoring Nick Swisher from third who tripled, cutting the Tigers lead to 4-2.

*In the seventh inning, Cleveland added two more runs making the score 8-4. Nick Swisher singled and was followed by a double by Carlos Santana. Mark Reynolds grounded out scoring Swisher and Michael Brantley hit a sac fly to score Santana.

Game Notes: All nine Tigers starters had hits…It was the tenth time Cabrera and Fielder homered in the same game…In addition to his seventh home run, Cabrera had a double in the sixth and has extended his hitting streak to nine games… Jhonny Peralta extended his hitting streak to nine games with a double in the second. He had two doubles on the nigh…Omar Infante had three hits, including two doubles…Jackson scored twice and leads the AL in runs with 33…Nick Swisher was a home run away from the cycle for the Indians…Justin Verlander (4-2, 1.55 ERA) goes for this fifth win of the year on Saturday vs. Indians righty Ubaldo Jimenez (2-2, 6.37)
