U.S. Senate close to authorizing more dredging funds

WASHINGTON (WKZO) -- A compromise is said to be close in the U.S. Senate to spend more money on dredging the nation's harbors.  The Great Lakes region currently has a 200-million dollar backlog for projects, and the situation has been made worse by near-record low water levels on Lake Michigan and Lake Huron in the past several months.

The "Detroit Free Press" reports the Senate is near a compromise to spend one-billion dollars from the Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund on dredging, as it's intended.  The federal government has raided the fund, which has a six-billion dollar surplus, to pay for other projects.
