KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Around 2:45 a.m. Wednesday, Michigan State Police troopers from the Paw Paw post tried to pull over a 2006 black Dodge Charger at the intersection of West Michigan Avenue and Drake Road in Oshtemo Township. The driver of the vehicle would not stop, instead leading police in a high speed pursuit down Drake Road to Stadium Drive, coming to a brief stop near 8th Street.
The driver made a U-turn and headed east, eventually forcing police to drop the chase as the vehicle entered downtown Kalamazoo at high speed, even after spike strips were used to no avail. Just minutes later, Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers found the vehicle and a canine unit was used to track the suspect, but the trail went cold.
It's believed the driver of the vehicle was 26-year-old Deqenice Laoway Smith, described as a black male five-feet, six-inches in height and weighing around 140-pounds. Smith has several outstanding warrants for his arrest and anyone with information on the case is asked to contact Michigan State Police.
