KALAMAZOO (WKZO) – A handful of participants in Sunday’s Kalamazoo Marathon will be runners who raced in the tragedy-stricken 2013 Boston Marathon. Most of the runners are local residents who were already signed up to participate in the Borgess Run for the Health of It before the Boston Marathon bombings occurred.
Lewis Hayden from Zeeland, MI is one of those runners who said he feels incomplete after leaving Boston. “There was no celebration,” Hayden said, “Everyone’s there to take part in this great thing and leave feeling accomplished, and that just didn’t happen.”
Thankfully, Hayden and the friends and family he was with had already left the race site when the bombs went off. Hayden, who ran a 3:07:14 in Boston, is returning to do the full 26.2 miles in the Kalamazoo Marathon as a pace runner for the 3:15 running group.
“I think there’s even more of a reason to return next year,” Hayden said about running in the 2014 Boston marathon. See above the full interview from Hayden at the Kalamazoo Marathon Expo.
