Houston, TX (WKZO) – A day after scoring 17 runs, the Tigers continued to punish Astros’ pitching with a 9-0 thrashing to complete a four game sweep over Houston.

Prince Fielder had a four RBI day including his eighth home run of the year, a two run shot in the first to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. After Brayan Pena’s two run shot in the second, his first home run of the season, Fielder added a two run single with the bases loaded to cap off a five run inning. Prince ranks second in the American League in RBIs with 32, trailing only Miguel Cabrera.

Justin Verlander was masterful as he flirted with a no hitter, not allowing a hit until the seventh inning. Verlander (4-2) lasted seven innings, striking out eight and only giving up two hits, both in the seventh, while lowing his ERA from 1.83 to 1.55.

Andy Dirks and Omar Infante each had solo shots for Detroit. Dirks went four for four, scoring three runs, and driving in a pair.

Astros starter Phil Humber (0-7) gave up eight runs – all earned – in just four innings of work.

Darrin Downs replaced Verlander to start the eighth and after loading the bases with only one out, but set down the next two Astros to persevere the shutout. Downs pitched the ninth as well without allowing a base runner.

Game Notes: The sweep for the Tigers was their first four game road sweep since 2006 against the Kansas City Royals…With the win the Tigers hold a half game lead over Kansas City for the lead in the AL Central…Tigers have the day off Monday and resume action on Tuesday against the Washington Nationals.
