KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- The Kalamazoo Marathon has officially kicked off its series of events starting with Friday night’s Meijer Kids Fun Run and Motivational Mile.
Over 2,000 kids and their families attended the Fun Run Expo at the Borgess Health and Fitness Center where they then ran “motivational” 1-mile run that seemed more like a chaotic sprint.
Attending this year’s Fun Run Expo was the Greater Kalamazoo Girls on the Run group.
Founded in 1996 by former Ironman triathlete Molly Barker, the GOTR organization, has over 200 locations across the United States and Canada, is designed to prepare youth girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living.
In addition to their own 5K set to take place at Waldo Stadium on May 23rd, the GOTR program is doing their part for this year’s Kalamazoo Marathon by setting up a Spirit Station along the course.
GOTR program coordinator Beth Gregory-Wallis says the station will be located at mile 9 of the course at the entrance of WMU’s Business Technology and Research Park, south of Parkview Ave and Drake Rd.
“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” Gregory-Wallis said, “we can’t wait to cheer on the runners!” See above an interview with Gregory-Wallis and also her daughter, GOTR member, Lucy Wallis.
