Fire at recycling center in Battle Creek fills sky with black smoke

BATTLE CREEK (WKZO) -- It was a huge dramatic fire, one of the biggest in recent Battle Creek History, sending huge black plumes of smoke into the evening sky that could be seen for miles.

It took 12 fire departments and an excavating firm, well over 8 hours to put out the blaze at the Cereal City Recycling Center on 6-1/2 mile road, and even then they were still finding hot spots through the night.

Two fire fighters had to be treated for heat exhaustion but there were no other serious injuries. What burned mainly was paper, plastic and wood materials waiting to be recycled. The flames were fanned by winds that also spread the fire to buildings on the property, and semi trailers being used for storage.

A damage assessment may take some time to compute.

It did take so much water to fight the fire that it nearly drained the city’s water system in that area. A boil water advisory has been put into effect along Golden Avenue, Beadle Lake Road to D Ave. and along Main Street until further notice.
