Houston, TX (WKZO) – Alex Avila hit a two run homer in the top of the ninth to put the Tigers in the lead and Jose Valverde closed out the game for a 4-3 Detroit win over the Astros.
Doug Fister made the start for the Tigers and allowed all three runs during the seventh inning before being replaced by Drew Smyly with none down. Smyly took over with runners on first and second but set down the next three hits to get out of the inning with no further damage. He tossed a perfect eighth for his second win of the year.
Don Kelly scored the first run for the Tigers in the second and Victor Martinez knocked in Miguel Cabrera in the fourth to put the Tigers up 2-0.
