KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- As the 2013 Kalamazoo Marathon approaches, runners all over the country are preparing to converge on Kalamazoo. Included in the group gearing up for the 26.2 mile race are those pacing the run. Pacers are hidden among mass of racers. They are the cheerleaders, motivators, and tour guides, making sure runners hit their goals.

Unlike someone training for a personal record, a pacer must train their bodies to stay at a specific speed. The type of endurance needed to be an effective pacer is achieved with months of continuous training. 1660 The Fan's Carolyn Binder got a crash course in what it takes to be a pacer from two runners with plenty of pacing experience. Kate Binder started pacing marathons after the first Kalamazoo Marathon in 2011, using that experience as a stepping stone for more races. Brett Beier was also inspired by his first experience at the Kalamazoo Marathon, and uses pacing to motivate others to run.

The 2013 Kalamazoo Marathon is set for Sunday May 5th. Stay connected on the Everything Kalamazoo Marathon page.
