Strong outing from Verlander plus three home runs give Tigers fifth straight win

Detroit, MI (WKZO) – Twins’ starter Vance Worley had only allowed one home run in 24 innings this season entering Tuesday nights’ game. Against the Tigers in less than five innings he gave up three long balls as the Tigers blasted their way past the Twins for a 6-1 victory, their fifth in a row.

Justin Verlander made the start for Detroit after he was taken out for precautionary reasons in his previous start after throwing only 96 pitches due to a blister on his thumb. Verlander showed no signs of discomfort from his thumb on Tuesday, as he tossed seven innings, allowing a single run and strikeout eight for his first win in three starts and third win of the year.

Miguel Cabrera started the home run parade in the first for Detroit as he put the Tigers on the board with a two run shot into the right fielder bleachers for his fourth homer of the year. Alex Avila’s third home run of the year, a solo shot in the second inning, gave the Tigers a 3-1 lead. Prince Fielder capped off the scoring with his seventh home run and second homer in as many days in the fifth with a two run shot for the Tigers’ fifth and sixth runs.

Former Tiger Wilkin Ramirez doubled in Justin Morneau in the second for the Twins only run.

Tigers Highlights:

*Returning to the lineup after an evening off, Torii Hunter laced a hit down the third base line for a double in the first and later scored on Cabrera’s home run.

*With runners on the corners and no outs in the fifth, Hunter grounded out scoring Omar Infante from third giving the Tigers a 4-1 lead.

*Drew Smyly pitched a scoreless eighth, and Joaquin Benoit recorded the final two outs in the ninth for Detroit.

Tigers Lowlights:

*The Tigers had a prime chance to add on more runs in the first after Prince Fielder and Victor Martinez each singled following Cabrera’s home run, but Andy Dirks grounded into a double play ending the inning.

*In the fourth with Jhonny Peralta on first after he reached base on a single, Alex Avila grounded into a double play to end the inning.

*Follow Fielder’s home run, Victor Martinez doubled but was later thrown out at home trying to score on a Dirks’ single.
