KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Kalamazoo’s new Jail Expansion isn’t expected to be a functioning jail for several months, but its ready to show off to the public this week.
The 23-million dollar addition to the current jail is designed in a way, with jail pods and new technologies that will allow the jail to be operated by fewer sworn officers and more civilians than the old jail requires.
Other built in features will allow inmates to be exposed to programming that will give them a chance to avoid returning to a life of crime.
As we have already reported, it will be phased into operation, with the new Kitchen and Laundry opened first, and other parts will be added until its fully functional by late summer.
The first half dozen civilian employees will soon be hired and trained to operate the control room in the new jail.
The open house will run from 1 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
