VAN BUREN COUNTY (WKZO) -- The NRC has scheduled a public hearing on Tuesday in South Haven to discuss the performance of the Palisades Nuclear plant during 2012, which the NRC says was a year of improvements.
Several serious incidents in 2011 prompted the NRC to lower the safety score of the plant to among the worst in the nation.
It has since been raised back up, but the NRC says it plans to station 2 inspectors at the Covert reactor to continue monitoring.
They also say there is further need for improvements in some areas of the plant. It follows a starker evaluation by the Union of Concerned Scientists who say the Palisades plant has had too many “near-misses” and that the NRC has been too lenient in the penalties assessed against Entergy, the New Orleans based firm that now owns the plant.
The meeting, which will be open to the public, is scheduled for 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Beach Haven Event Center, 104020 M-140 in South Haven.
