KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- It was there in a list with other routine purchases planned by the Kalamazoo School board.

On the list: $28-thousand for 30 desk top computers, $41-thousand for 30 laptops, $9.5-million for a new Washington Writers Academy. As purchase requests go, it was by far the biggest the trustees had approved in sometime.

Supt. Michael Rice said it was also due. The building was built in 1919.

It’s all being financed by bonds approved by voters. They plan to spend the next year on construction. The new building will provide all the efficiencies of new technology with many of the design elements of the old school.

In the interim, the students of the elementary school will take classes at a former Christian School purchased by the district in the past year.

The Trustees also approved spending $1.8-million to remodel and restore the Woodward School for Technology and Research, an iconic and historic Elementary School built in the 1920’s in the Stuart Neighborhood.
