DETROIT (WKZO) – WMU Junior Defenseman Dan DeKeyser held the hockey world in suspense for just under a week, coming to terms with the Detroit Red Wings on a 2-year entry-level NHL deal on Friday according to the team’s official Twitter feed.
DeKeyser departs Western Michigan after his junior campaign in which he tallied two goals and 13 assists for 15 points in 35 games for the Broncos. He was named to the All-CCHA team this season, helping Western Michigan to a 3rd place finish in the CCHA regular season standings.
In 2011, DeKeyser earned the CCHA’s Defensive Defensman of the Year en route to the Broncos first CCHA Tournament championship since 1986.
There’s no official word when DeKeyser will make his NHL debut, but he will reportedly skate with the team at practice tomorrow. The Red Wings are at Joe Louis Arena Sunday against the Chicago Blackhawks on 1660 The Fan at 12:30 pm. When he does skate, he will wear #65 after wearing #5 for the Broncos.
DeKeyser joins Dane Walters who signed an amateur tryout contract Friday with the Woocester Sharks of the AHL.
