KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Just weeks ago, a Michigan National Guard engineering unit based in Kalamazoo returned to a happy celebration at Portage Central High, and that event is about to be repeated.

A second unit of National Guardsmen returns home this week, but the event may be a bit more somber because not all of them are getting home alive.

90 members of the 14-33rd Engineer Company based in Augusta will be reunited with family members at a homecoming ceremony at Read Fieldhouse on the WMU campus Thursday afternoon at 3:30.

Just weeks into their 10-month deployment in Afghanistan, Sgt. Kyle McClain of Shelby Township was killed by an I.E.D. and four other members of the unit were seriously injured. He has since been buried at Fort Custer National Cemetery near their base.
