A new bill cracks down on those who scam the elderly by stiffening the sentences on anyone who gets caught. State Representative Tom Leonard says that the plan is designed to better protect the elderly and mentally handicapped from scam artists.
As a former prosecutor, Leonard says he knows how common embezzlement from vulnerable adults is. Under the general embezzlement statute, judges do have the discretion to impose consecutive sentencing, but that discretion was left out of the specific law pertaining to vulnerable adult embezzlement. Leonard's bill would bring that statute up to date.
