Auburn Hills, MI (1660 The Fan) – Gary Harris had 21 points and Michigan State never trailed as the Spartans have reached the Sweet 16 with a 70-48 victory. MSU joins Michigan as the first two teams to reach the round of 16. It’s also the first time that the in-state rivals have reached the Sweet 16 in the same season.
Adreian Payne recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds while adding five blocks. Derrick Nix scored 13, grabbed eight rebounds and had four steals.
Michigan State will take on either Duke or Creighton in Indianapolis on Friday.
The Spartans led 32-29 at halftime but doubled up the Tigers in second half for the 22 point smack down over 6th seeded Memphis.
Geron Johnson topped the scoring charts for the Tigers. Memphis shot only 29.7% from the field but did force 18 Spartan turnovers.
Keith Appling went to locker-room in the 2nd half and didn’t return. Coach Tom Izzo said Appling could have returned had the game been in question.
