BATTLE CREEK (WKZO) -- The FAA has released its list of airports that will lose tower staff because of the Sequester and W.K. Kellogg Airport in Battle Creek was on the list.
Despite the fact that they have an air national guard base and one of the highest volumes of landings and departures in the state, The F.A.A. says as of April 7th, they will have to do it without a control tower staff directing traffic. For officials and fliers nationwide it’s a safety issue.
Airport officials are looking into privately staffing the tower, which was only recently built. They say they have to look after the welfare of the 233-thousand people who take off and land there every year.
149 towers are losing their staff nationally, including at Coleman Young Airport near Detroit and the airport in Marquette, all due to the sequester.
