ANN ARBOR (WKZO) -- The fungal meningitis outbreak has been a huge story in Michigan for months as 16 have died and literally hundreds have gotten ill, or been diagnosed as contaminated and remain at risk of also getting ill.

Now “60-minutes” has found a whistle blower who worked inside the New England Compounding Center to explain what went wrong, and how steroid shots were contaminated.

Lab Tech Joe Connelly says they were supposed to be low volume but became manufacturers overnight, prompting him to warn his supervisor, that they were risking a mistake that could hurt patients.

The company is now bankrupt facing hundreds of lawsuits and its former owners are under criminal investigation.

“60-Minutes” will broadcast the entire story Sunday night.
