KEELER (WKZO) -- The Van Buren County Sheriff's Department is warning about a scam being run through the mail.

A Keeler Township resident contacted the Sheriff's Department after receiving a postcard that said she was eligible for a 100-dollar gift certificate from Walmart or Target.  When she called the toll free number on the card, the person answering the phone had a foreign accent and said the only way to get her the gift card was if they charged her a small processing fee and they needed her credit card information to do so.

A call to Walmart revealed they knew nothing of such a promotion.  Law enforcement's encouraging the public to keep an eye out for similar scams and remind everyone never to give personal information-- especially credit card information-- over the phone to strangers.
