KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- It was a nail biter. The U.S. Government has officially notified K-RESA that they will be awarded the $4.3-million Head Start Contract to provide the federal pre-school program in Kalamazoo County this fall.
Until now, Kalamazoo County Government had administered Head Start, while the Kalamazoo Regional Educational Service Agency ran the Great Start Readiness Program, Kalamazoo County Ready 4s, and Early Childhood Special Education from a variety of different grants.
The decision was made this year to consolidate them at K-RESA, but the Federal Government was slow to approve the transfer.
It has been a stressful period for former Head Start employees who have had to wait to find out if they would be able to re-apply for their old jobs with K-RESA. That will now be possible
Because of an increase in state funding for pre-school, they expect to actually have more slots open for children this fall than last year.
